Toshiyuki Iwasaki (Valencia, SPAIN)

More than 40 years ago my father, who loves the sea as much as I do, took me to the beach of Tateyama, on the south east coast of Japan, along the Pacific ocean   where the clean Kuroshio current flows, not far away from home, because I wanted to pick up seashells.

From that moment, I became really fond of seashells and the sea.

Nowadays I live in Spain. I’ve been living on the Mediterranean coast for more than 20 years but I go back to Japan in the summer vacation every year.

These watercolours were painted in 2015 and 2016 on Tateyama beach.

They mean a lot to me because my father who is 84 years old again took me there on those summer days, we really enjoyed every moment, picking up the shells, painting seascapes and I experienced a regression to my childhood … these paintings link me to my roots and my own life.

The smell of the sea, the sound of the seagulls, pure pleasure when find beautiful seashells …
